Dentist about
......watch out.
Have you visited the dentist lately? I wonder if
you noticed whether any of the office staff wore surgical gloves.
Of course there is nothing wrong with wearing surgical gloves, if
they are used correctly.
I attended at a dentists' office, located in the
City of Wrexham, some months back, and one of the things that I
noticed, right up front, all of the office staff were wearing surgical
gloves. The dentist was actually walking around the general office
checking records and things while wearing surgical gloves. I watched
from my position in the waiting room.
It might seem that there is no harm in this procedure
but then I began to reflect upon the causes and transmission of
communicable diseases, especially HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes and AIDS.
I questioned the dentist concerned and I
was informed, to my surprise, that the gloves he wore were for his
protection and not for the protection of the patient.
I watched further as he opened filing cabinets
that had been handled by other staff. I watched as he placed his
ballpoint pen in his mouth and then went on to handle the contaminated
pen with his gloved hands. I watched as he opened the surgery door
for his next patient, a young girl in her teens, knowing that the
handle of the door was excessively contaminated with all kinds of
bacteria from former patients who opened and closed the door with
blood on their hands.
Yes that's right, if you have attended at the dentists'
for invasive surgery, you almost certainly will leave with traces
of blood on your hands. Now I'm not saying that everyone who attends
at the dentists' surgery is going to contract some deadly disease,
but the odds are, you will be contaminated with one bacteria or
another. Not all of these bacteria are harmful but the aforementioned
complaints do arise from contact with contaminated body fluids.
Remember, the dentist will ultimately place his
contaminated gloved hand in your mouth. This is the same, gloved
hand that he placed in the mouth of other former patients. You perhaps
don't believe this, yet if he is prepared to walk around the office
wearing contaminated gloves, all the contaminants of the office
will finish up on his gloves and eventually in your mouth. I
don't know if the dentist ever changed his gloves when treating
other patients but I do know that he very definitely did not change
his gloves when he was about to treat me. I stopped him dead in
his tracks and questioned him thoroughly about this unhealthy practice
and his contaminated gloves.
He proceeded to wash his gloved hands under the
surgery tap. I watched in awe and disbelief understanding that he
expected me to accept this practice as being hygienic. He went on
to explain that he had covered his gloves with a strong disinfectant
prior to placing them under the tap water. I informed him that if
his gloved hands were now deemed to be sterile, to a high degree,
then why didn't dentists and surgeons use this technique to sterilise
their equipment during invasive surgery? There would be no need
to sterilise the dental equipment in an autoclave. The dentist could
simply wash them in this magic disinfectant. It seemed that this
dentist didn't have the faintest idea when it came to hygiene. The
laughable part of this process is, he turned off the tap by the
handle which had been contaminated by his dirty glove originally.
Stringent measures must be taken during the sterilising process
of surgical and dental instruments. The autoclaves must be operated
at very high temperatures for lengthy periods, if sterilisation
is to take place. There are no short cuts using magic disinfectants.
Did you know that the piece of equipment, used by
the dentist, to remove all the debris from your mouth, after invasive
surgery, relies upon suction created by a diaphragm pump apparatus?
The operation of this suction machine depends upon a small diaphragm
oscillating backward and forward, much like an aquarium air pump.
The problem arises when the machine is first switched on. Any residue
of bodily fluids left in the pump lines from any former patient
may be pumped into your mouth. There is always some residue left
in the apparatus from previous patients no matter how well the flushing
process is used to evacuate the contaminants. It is this residue
that may cause you harm.
These pumps are notorious for this malfunction.
So, you may finish up with some of the former patients body fluids
in your mouth. This is not a scare tactic it is a known fact and
extensive research has been carried out in Canada on just this problem.
Britain seems to be lagging far behind North America when it comes
to dental procedures and practices.
Did you know that there is a very precise procedure
for the sterilisation of all the dentists' surgical instruments?
The question I ask myself is, why on earth would a dentist sterilise
any of his dental equipment and then use contaminated gloves when
treating a patient. Agreed that precautions should be taken by him
to protect himself from infections by wearing surgical gloves and
other protection. He has a far greater liability to his patient
when it comes to protection from infectious diseases caused through
his negligence.
Did you know that the walls of the dentists x-ray
room should be constructed in a manner so as not to contaminate
any portion of any other room? X-rays are powerful and may be transmitted
through walls to adjoining buildings. The effects of x-rays on humans
are cumulative and can be disastrous. Most dental surgeries are
housed in rejuvenated and renovated houses. On close inspection
you will find that there are no protective measures taken to contain
any scattered x-rays. Pity the people on the other side of the wall.
Insist on protective aprons for genitalia when having
x-ray pictures taken of your teeth. Insist that your dentist changes
his gloves in front of you. Insist that he operates his vacuum pump
for several minutes before placing any part of it in your mouth.
Be very suspicious of any dentist who does not wear
a face guard. During invasive surgery body fluids may be transferred
from you to the dentist in the form of a fine spray given off by
the high speed drill used in certain procedures. If he wears gloves
for his protection as stated then surely you would expect him to
be knowledgeable on the effects of high speed drills. If he is not,
then you do not need his services.
I might add that I attended at several dental offices
before I was prepared to accept one that seemed to know what he
was doing, or should I say she. I had to travel to Chester for suitable
dental treatment which says a lot for the dentists of Wrexham.
Walk out of any dentists office if the staff wear
surgical gloves in the general office, that office is totally contaminated.
Remember that the majority of dentists are not doctors and it is
an offence under the Dentists Act to claim to be a doctor, unless
an actual doctorate degree is in place. You may call your dentist
Mister and not Doctor.
Finally, did you sign any kind of a document, which
questioned whether you had been previously contaminated with the
HIV virus, or if you suffered from AIDS or any other comunicable
disease? If you did not sign such a document then in all probability
neither did any patient who may have been a carrier of these diseases
and sat in the dentist chair before you. It's
your life, or your families', in your dentist's hands.
I noticed in the Sunday Mail that a Judge had ordered
that the identity of an HIV positive NHS specialist not be disclosed
they
are out there
.be afraid
.or be aware at least.
May I say that I agree with the Order of the judge but find it difficult
to accept that any dentist should perform invasive surgery knowing
that he is a carrier of any infectious disease? Be aware and watch
out for these negligent points when you next visit your dentist,
you will be amazed.
