Memories of Speke

I was born in Bootle, when I was 2 years old we moved to live on the old estate of Speke, in the half houses on Lovel Road,.

My first school was Stocktonwood Road School . I can remember my first day there. My mother took me to school and while she was putting my hat and coat on the peg in the cloakroom, I was heading for the door of the school when she caught me. I spent that morning on one of the rocking horses, that they had in the hall, as I cried my eyes out. I spent 6 years at Stocktonwood Road school with a brief time at theAnnex on Harefield Road. All of the old schools have been demolished now, Central Avenue, Stapleton Avenue and now Stocktonwood Road school.

Some of the girls I remember in my class were Christine Jones, Muriel Green, Majorie Mathers, Jean Jones, Edith Grimsditch, Edna Appleton, Sandra Conlon, Lynne Merrilies, Carol Young, Marion Evans, Sally Clayes, Anne Barker, just to name a few.I recall the years when I was the leader of the Morris Dancing at All Saints Church Hall and the parades along the streets of Speke. I was also in the Brownies and the Guides. During the 1950's, when I was eleven years old, I was in a play at All Saints Church. I played the part of a "Jack-in-the-box", doing all kinds of acrobats.

It was here at All Saints Church that, my husband-to-be , first saw me (little did I know until after we were married). I left Stocktonwood Road School and went to Skerry's College located on Rodney Street, Liverpool. Some of the girls I remember being in my class were, Betty & Margaret Lloyd and Myra Williams. I wrote to Betty for many years and I always received a Christmas card from her every year until recently. By this time we had moved house again and lived in Gerneth Close. I remember doing most of my shopping at the Crescent which used to be a good place to shop and to meet all your neighbors for a friendly chat and the usual local gossip. I returned to Speke in 1973 and again in 1996 for short holidays. Speke has changed a great deal over the years... some good -- some bad. I was sorry to hear that Stocktonwood Road School has been torn down.

So many wonderful memories of the early days of my school life. I remember the Sunday afternoon walks, that my husband and I used to take, in the grounds of Speke Hall. We spent many pleasant hours just walking and chatting in that part of Speke.

I would love to hear from any of the old school mates who may remember me.
